“I hope this publication can develop a shared language with metal detectorist’s and move us toward and ever increasing collaboration”.~Giovanna Peebles

The March 2015 issue of the SAA Archaeological Record—the magazine of the Society of American Archaeology is now out.

This month’s issue is a special thematic issue, all about archaeological practice on reality television (i.e. metal detecting reality shows).  As the popularity of these reality shows has increased, archaeologists have been working with TV executives and producers, trying to find ways to communicate and form relationships with responsible detectorist’s and the public.

Be sure to check out the article on page 30, by recently retired Vermont State Archaeologist, Giovanna Peebles entitled “Reality Television and Metal Detecting: Let’s be Part of the Solution and Not Add to the Problem”.

Giovanna has a positive attitude toward detectorist’s and the value of metal detecting in archaeology.  She is also the current chair of the Task Force on Metal Detecting of Archaeological Sites on Reality Television.

This newly formed Task Force seems like a step in the right direction.  Hopefully, it will help in forming relationships between the two groups.

If you metal detect, you will definitely want to read this–Click here to check it out!!
