I’m going to go off topic here, and I might get some flack for it, but like my pal Dick Stout says, “It’s my blog”, and as you’ll see, it really does and has affected my metal detecting.
So here’s the deal:
I paid $25k for my Jetta Wolfsburg, the engine seized at 76k miles. The Volkswagen customer service advocates attitude insinuated “that sucks for you”, and the VW dealer wants $7k for a new engine, but will only warrantee the new engine for 1 year.
Is it just me, or does that sound like a company who
won’t stand behind their product?
Now, because of this car problem, I missed “Go Minelabbing Day” in Atlantic City, NJ. Totally unacceptable!! And…without a car, I can’t metal detect, and that is a tragedy in itself.
I understand the power train warrantee was for 60k, but I don’t agree with it, because:
1.) I don’t abuse my car.
2.) These things should never happen.
3.) A new engine should be covered under the same warranty as the original.
To add insult to major injury, not only are we German, and a Volkswagen family who has always promoted the brand, but my son puts on the annual Northeast season opener Volkswagen car show “Dubs on Defrost” every April. This show draws thousands of Volkswagen enthusiasts from all over the Northeast.
We are a Volkswagen family through and through, and this is how Volkswagen is rewarding our loyalty.
After perusing the online VW forums, I predict Volkswagen is going to be slapped with another class action lawsuit, as it seems their motors have a habit of seizing at around 80k miles, with their timing chains skipping and water pumps going. Considering timing chains are designed to exceed the life of the vehicle, and they are not a serviceable item, they should really be helping out folks, not screwing them.
Hope you are not jinxing me….I love my pug bug. 14 years old and still chugging along….

Your car is not jinxed because it is the color of Peeps. Any other color, yes, but peeps color no.
JMO though.
Well that is crappy. I cannot speak of VWs quality because the only one I have owned was a 1980 Rabbit that had been converted from Diesel to gas.. We had a nasty ending with a thrown rod and engine fire. Hopefully a dealer or someone from VW will see this and step up!
Well Steve, they had a bad reputation for a long time, but due to their clever marketing and customer service, they had redeemed themselves. I think though, that they are headed back to where they began. Too bad.
You and your damn peeps….what do you do when Easter is over?
Oh c’mon now Dick–you know after Easter they are 90% off 🙂 I’ve got huge back up supply now.
So I actually have a pug peep and not a pug bug?
No Dick….you have a peepy pug bug.
Sorry for all that crap they are putting you through, low life’s SHOULD stand by their product . We are with you ALL the way!!!!!!!!! I have got aTOYOTA CARROLA with over 500 thou. on it
Obviously I should have bought a Toyota 🙂
Thanks for the support Dennis!
Contact VW relations. They can over ride the opinion of a dealer. If you know the timing chain was the cause, be prepared to document that. You will need to show it was no owner neglect. If Dubs on Defrost is VW sanctioned or sponsored they can be a strong partner.
Joe-
It was customer relations I was dealing with–they call their reps “advocates” (I know, stop laughing). Anyway, I moved up to a manager, and she said it was her decision and she was sticking to it.
Bottom line is they don’t care about the consumer after they get their $$.
I think vw should pay for the repair , they don’t practice what the preach being a vw family and are there to help at Least on the local level .
That’s why there is local news who loves these stories and the dept of consumer protection
HERE IS VW’S RESPONSE–REALLY? Dear Allyson, please be sure that we take your criticism very seriously. Have you already contacted the local support in the USA? You can reach them via phone 001-800 822-8987 or e-mail volktalk@vw.com by stating your name and contact details as well as your vehicle identification number. We wish you all the best.
