While at a hunt a few weeks back in Groton, CT with some members of my metal detecting club, The Nor’easters, a reporter, Abigail Pesta, from the Wall Street Journal was there to do a human interest story on metal detecting. The article is titled “For Metal ‘Detectorists’, the Real Find Is to Sweep in Peace”. Its an interesting article, and she addresses a lot of issues in the hobby. The article came out today, and You can check out the story here.

Heartening report. Thanks for posting, Allyson!
Thx John, but shouldn’t I be thanking you? I just saw the cover. Funny but cool at the same time. That’s me, silly, but tough.
Any publicity is good….hopefully this will help. I am curious however… did someone actually say this?
“Some devotees have taken to metal detecting under the cover of night, a controversial practice known as nighthawking”.
Yeah, I guess so, but it wasn’t me!
She already knew about night hawks..
Yeah when I arranged to have her meet us at the hunt she already had heard about issues from the UK with night hawkers. I spoke to her at length she is quite the writer. She had a lot more written than was printed. Unfortunately editors have to chop some content in-order to fit the story in. I was bewildered though. This is the largest paper in the US. I put out the news on face book and email. Only 2 people commented on the story. Other than myself. We all say we are not getting enough press for our past time, but here was a perfect opportunity to create a commented dialog on the story and yet no one did.. I do not get it? Here is a major paper with major cred in the city and no one bothered to write anything? Why do we try?
Jessie
Well Jess, it seems everyone has an opinion, but not too many take action. I suspect a lot of folks are shy about public forums. I get a lot of people emailing me with comments, but for some reason they don’t want to post on a blog. I suspect it may be too public for them, or they don’t want anyone to disagree with them.
But don’t worry, I plan on posting a comment.
Well when I went to the comments area it brought up a purchase…where I had to add charge card, etc… How did you do it Jess?
I was looking at the article and then saw the comments tab and I clicked on it. I then saw the login with your facebook ID area.

It allows you to login with your facebook id to post and read comments to stories.
Jess
Will give it a whirl again…..maybe it was that fourth glass of red.
Jessie, tried it again, and I am not comfortable with their accessing my FB friends.
