Got home a little while ago from the Outhouse Orchards hunt, in Croton Falls, NY, hosted by the Nor’easters Metal Detecting Club, out of Stamford, CT.
I hadn’t planned on going to the hunt, as I’ve hunted there a few times in the past, but while drinking my morning coffee, I looked outside around 8:30 am and thought, what the heck–The hunt starts at 9am, It was a nice day. And the Orchard was a mere 10 miles away.

While at the Nor’easters Catskill Hunt this past weekend, I received an X-Pointer pinpointer from the distributor to evaluate and he insisted I would be impressed.
I had recently been hearing mention here and there about the new X-Pointer, and as always when trying out new products, I maintain and eager but skeptical attitude, until I actually see for myself how they perform in the field. Let’s face it, no amount of demonstration or video’s is a replacement for actually using the product yourself.
I used the X-Pointer for about a 10 hour straight day of hunting on Saturday, and I did not baby it, I really put it to the test.

I had a great time yesterday at the Great Catskill Mountain Coin Shoot & Relic hunt in Big Indian, NY, hosted by the Nor’easters Metal Detecting Club. As a matter of fact, people are still up there enjoying the hunt right now, as it was a two day event. Ah… well, my ride had to be in Staten Island this morning at 10am, so I could only hunt the one day, but I’m happy to have just gotten one day in because it was worth it.
Finally got out and the detecting Gods were kind enough to bless me with a King George (date illegible), probably ’cause it was only a half inch down. They also gave me a nice silver bookmark, and the hallmarks date it to 1924.
I got out with one of my “cellar hole junkie” pals, Dave Wise this past weekend to hunt a few cellar holes.
The weather report called for warmth and sun, but by the looks of things, drizzle was on the days menu. I didn’t mind though, because:
I received my NEL Sharpshooter coil for my E-trac from Gold Digger Metal Detectors the other day. I’ve been dying to try this baby out, and I believed the “hype”, because there was so much of it. Now that I’ve experienced the coil first hand, I’m going to hype it up some more.
Those of you who know me, or are regular readers of my blog, are aware of my fondness for Oxen Shoes.
This fondness was not derived out of a genetic predisposition toward the objects, it was born out of necessity, due to my uncanny ability to locate every oxen shoe within a 300 foot radius at every site I hunt (and yes, my parents are very proud).

I’ve had a lot of offers on my Oxen shoe collection since posting a photo of it on my Facebook page; and since there is so much interest in acquiring these rare and valuable items, I have decided to actually go through with my plans for opening the first Oxen Shoe Museum (pending funding).

I set out the other day to scout a spot for a future hunt in an area I had thought about going to many times, but I had just never gotten around to it.
I started off following a trail through a small pine grove, and then I was in a swamp. Discouraging, yes, but… what else is new? Swamps are everywhere around here, hence the reason my hometown was called Swampville a few hundred years ago.
I was contacted last week by a gentleman named Adam in Katonah, NY, who had lost his wedding band while doing some yard work.
I was more than happy to help Adam out, and showed up determined, with my detector in hand.
After introducing ourselves, Adam gave me a backyard tour of the area he was working in, where he suspected he lost the ring.
Carol Cole is a newbie to the hobby of metal detecting, it is something she has always wanted to do, and she has been officially at it for about a month now.
Carol lives in northeast Kansas, is retired, married, with children, grand children and great-grandchildren. She volunteers at her local arts center for BBBS, and enjoys watercolor, collage and found objects (imagine that) mixed media.

It’s a good thing we seem to forget the miserable, dreary winter season once a bit of warmth moves in, because this past winter has been one of the worst winters I can remember in a long time.
It was so cold outside that I was neglecting detecting. I didn’t forget about it–just neglected it. I mean, I thought about it frequently, looked at the thermometer, got annoyed, and went back to my computer. Occassionally I looked hopefully outside to see if the snow was melting (just in case I missed something), but no, each time I looked there was still 3 feet of frozen snow covering the ground.
But something really cool happened last week–It got warmer. Amazing, I know. I’m sure you all felt it too.

Our pattern challenged arkie pal from Poland is at it again. This time spouting his venom at oh, I don’t know, anyone who detects, Dick Stout, Lisa MacIntyre, people who’s clothing doesn’t clash, anyone who is not him…the usual.
Mr. Barfords recent “Spout out”, perhaps akin to our slang “Shout out”?, has me in a tizzy, trying to resist a response, but the coin fairies are tossing glitter at my response receptors, therefore, as a matter of hypothetical principle; I must respond to the narcissistic rantings of my (past) love interest.

If you don’t run a website, or blog, you may not be privy to the world of “stats”, or statistics as they are more formally called.
Word Press, which I use for my blog, comes with a built-in
program that tracks the “stats” of your blog, keeping track of blog traffic, i.e. number of visitors, unique IP’s, links clicked on by visitors, pages viewed by visitors, etc…
Bloggers can also download plug-ins like Slim Stat or Google Analytics for stat tracking. Myself, I use Slim Stat, although I’m sure I do not use it properly, or to its full potential.
When I first started my blog, I found the information they offered very interesting, in that I could check on what visitors to my site were reading and tailor my future posts to what seemed to be popular.
Awkward Moments in Metal Detecting:
*That awkward moment when you’re trying to explain to a non-detectorist why you detect.
*That awkward moment when you’re showing the awesome stuff you just found to your buddy, and you realize they got skunked.
Detectorist’s are no strangers to finding eating utensils, after all, folks didn’t use plastic flatware in the “olden days”, but if I find another *$#%! spoon….OMG.
Oh, of course the signal is great, and then you pull out the spoon, and mutter “another friggin’ spoon”, out loud to yourself.
It’s just a lowly spoon–not even a silver spoon, just a crappy silver plated nickel utensil to stick in a box with all the other crappy flatware you’ve found.
I was going through my collection of recently found treasure, (I’m using the word treasure very lightly here), and decided I would share some of these beauties with you all….enjoy!
Quite a nice little duo found about 6″ from each other, (another reminder to re-check that hole). It appears Tonto got sliced in half and the Lone Ranger lost a foot in the skirmish, but they have great detail and the paint is still intact. I’m sure they’ll look much better after some cleaning.
I’m wondering if its my age-seeing as I am due to be a grandma in the Spring, but I’m seriously thinking of removing the batteries from my machines for the winter, because…well…it’s cold out.
Hard to believe, but Ms. “Die Hard” Detectorista, the gal who hits up the beaches all winter, regardless of temperature; leaving only when it becomes so frigid sheets of ice are starting to form on top of the salt water, is debating warmth.
I’ve been a detecting fool at times. You know you’ve gotta check yourself when you drive an hour home with the heated seats on high and upon arrival, your legs are still freezing cold to the touch.

Will “Detectorista” end up in the Oxford dictionary? If John Winter has his way it will–and why not? I think “Detectorista” is a pretty cool word, even if I did coin it myself.
The next challenge should be to get spell check to recognize the word Detectorist, and OMG how annoying is it when people say “He (or she) is a Metal Detector”, instead of a Metal Detectorist? Hello people–I am not the machine, I am the user of the machine!!!
I’ve been using the Garrett Pro-Pointer for a few years now, and it’s in my opinion, the best pinpointer on the market. Even so, I admit being frustrated at times trying to pinpoint a target.
I don’t know why this is the first time re-tuning the pinpointer has been brought to my attention, but I am thrilled to have found this video, which was put together by Garrett and shows a few tricks you can use with the pro-pointer.

My better half and I were short on time yet wanted to do a few hours of detecting without traveling far from home. This posed a dilemma, as there is hardly a wooded area or decent park in my city. We decided to wing it, and headed toward a nearby town, hoping to find a spot along the way.
Ten minutes into our drive, we were passing an area we knew had been hunted by almost every detectorist around. I never like to say a place is hunted out, but when I think of this site, that’s exactly what comes to mind.
Hypothetically, it should be a great site-with the remains of the towns first saw mill (1700’s), and the leftovers from centuries of occupation. The rusty remnants hanging from trees and piled on rock walls attest to its “hunted out” status and the frustrations of previous searchers. The last person I know to have found something there pulled out a button a few years back. This was a considered a major triumph, allowing him to keep his “legend” status in local detecting circles.
