I’m wondering if its my age-seeing as I am due to be a grandma in the Spring, but I’m seriously thinking of removing the batteries from my machines for the winter, because…well…it’s cold out.
Hard to believe, but Ms. “Die Hard” Detectorista, the gal who hits up the beaches all winter, regardless of temperature; leaving only when it becomes so frigid sheets of ice are starting to form on top of the salt water, is debating warmth.
I’ve been a detecting fool at times. You know you’ve gotta check yourself when you drive an hour home with the heated seats on high and upon arrival, your legs are still freezing cold to the touch.
Yup, thats the fool I tend to be. Hunting the woods in Summer and the beaches in Winter. Seems it should be the other way around.
This winter though, my attitude towards detecting in the cold is…”I don’t wanta”.
It’s been over a month now since I’ve ventured out with my detector in hand, which is most unusual for me. Normally the restlessness overtakes me, I grab my machine, and I’m off. But right now, its cold, and “I don’t wanta”.
Of course, my sleep has benefited from my attitude, since I no longer wake up suddenly from the realization I forgot my machine is still in the car. Don’t tell me this hasn’t happened to you.
Unfortunately for me though, I was watching the weather forecast this morning. My ears perked up when the weatherman said “inland flooding on the coast”. Really? C’mon! I don’t wanta!! But…I guess I gotta.
Happy Hunting!
When I was in NJ I remember calling out of work, driving to the shore on a moments notice and meeting just about every detectorist in the area. Those were the good ole days…couldn’t do it today, let alone in winter weather. Good luck and Happy New Year!
Ah yes, I am familiar. Driving 4 hours to detect a beach in NJ is a major deja vu, only to be outdone by driving to VA to hunt and returning home the same day…whats wrong with me? I’ll stick a little closer to home and the wood stove for now.
There’s absolutely no excuse not to detect through the four seasons.
You’ve just got to buy an all in one ski suit for those really cold days on the beach. Not sure if they do one in camo yet!
Camo? Did you say Camo? I’m in.

Thanks for the referral Dick. Seems to be a quality item, and warm too. Might be a good replacement for the Calvin Klein parka CP bought me when the zipper on my Squall jacket broke during a mid winter hunt a few years back. I was oh so stylish on the beach that day, but sad to say, still cold. I’m feeling kind of old now…
Old? Hah…you wait.
Ready for the snow?
Great post Allyson! I hunt all year and it is tough here in New England, but I’ll be on the beach tomorrow morning and it will be about 5 degrees. I dress in multiple layers (4 up top & 2 on the bottom) though and usually end up sweating. My cheeks get a little numb if it’s windy but not a big deal.
Be safe and Happy Hunting!
